Formed on November 22, 1875, from parts of Benner and Harris Townships in Centre County, Pennsylvania, College Township is a Pennsylvania Township of the Second Class under the Home Rule Charter and Optional Plans Law.
Originally governed by a Board of Supervisors, in 1976, voters deemed it most efficient to change to a Council-Manager form of government that would allow for the separation of legislative and administrative responsibilities.
